Collecting goods for tsunami victims

In the Helix building people can donate goods for Sri Lanka and Sumatra. There is a request for useful goods in good condition. The first transport left on Monday 10 January. A second transport has been planned for 19 January. The collection is an initiative of Pleuni Smits, who works at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry.

Especially medical materials and communication equipment, such as laptops and mobile phones, as well as cotton sheets and blankets are welcome. “The BHV-team of TU/e donated the old but still useful medicines and materials, which they are obliged to refresh every year. Some people donated winter clothes, which is very sweet but not really practicable”, says initiator Smits. She started this action because she wanted to do something for the victims of the tsunami in Sri Lanka and Sumatra. “There are enough people contributing money. I tried to find a way to send goods. For this I approached a number of relief agencies, but the transportation of goods is very difficult. Eventually I got a relief worker on the phone who was in Sri Lanka. He referred me to the action H2O.” This is an action set up by the foundation HorizonHolland/Rijswijk, which has been designated by the Red Cross. Useful goods may be handed in to Pleuni Smits, Helix Oost 1.33, 040-247 2840.

In addition to this action there will be one today, Thursday 13 January, at the sports centre of TU/e. Here t’ai chi meetings will be held in Hal 1 as from 12.10 hours. The initiator of this is Twan Boereboom, employed by the High Tech Campus and t’ai chi trainer. Participants are asked to pay an amount of five euros or a multiple of that. The proceeds are destined for giro 555.
