Dutch Design Week
9 oktober 2008 - From October 18 thru October 26 Eindhoven will be hosting the seventh edition of the Dutch Design Week (DDW), the largest design event in the Netherlands. Around 1500 Dutch and international designers will show their work at more than 50 locations all over the city. Major themes this year include sustainability, social design, and fair trade. This big event starts with a speech by Alberto Alessi.
In Design United students from the study programs Industrial Design of the three universities of technology will show their designs, such as the Curious Paths. This system, developed by TU/e students in collaboration with Microsoft, was designed to make tourists curious about interesting locations in an urban environment. These locations have been marked by other users who share profile properties with the user. This is done by means of special software that generates a list of interesting locations on the basis of the coupling mentioned above. Users can find these locations by actively looking for vibration patterns in the environment. This will take them to hitherto unknown spots.

For nine days, Eindhoven will be the platform of contemporary design. During these days, people can visit lectures, workshops, fashion shows, seminars, and exhibitions. Such as the exhibition Design United at the TU/e. The Departments of Industrial Design of the three universities of technology in Eindhoven, Delft and Twente will show how cooperation between industry and universities can lead to valuable and innovative products and services for tomorrow’s society.

The exhibition presents a mix of designs ranging from direct-test prototypes to challenging scenarios and concepts. The projects will be explained by experts, among others, the designers and researchers themselves. They will provide the visitor with a clear picture of what kind of groundbreaking designs we can expect in the near and far future.

For several temporary locations in Eindhoven the DDW Designers have been invited to convert them into design restaurants or unique bars like the Plan 2, a combined restaurant, bar and dancing in the Klokgebouw 10 at Strijp S. At Strijp S many initiatives take place, ranging from the Dutch Living Rooms in which the larger bureaus present themselves to special projects by recently graduated designers. In Stadhuisplein you can visit a large greenhouse where the Dutch Design Awards are held. Almost all exhibitions are free./.
