Serenades about carnations and beautiful women
17 september 2009 - If it is up to the organizers of the Tuna festival, Eindhoven will from 25 thru 27 September be transformed into a Spanish city where tunas will hold a musical parade and bring countless serenades. TU/e is most emphatically involved in this ninth edition of the festival. Hence there will be a mailing for all staff members and students and a photo exhibition will be staged as well.

The greatest Tuna festival worldwide is organized by very small associations. About four hundred tunos, divided over twenty groups of musicians (tuna), will accept the invitation from Tuna Ciudad de Luz (the men’s association, ten members) and La Tuniña (the women’s club, five members) and come to Eindhoven.

The festival is opened on Friday afternoon with the ‘pasacalles’, a musical parade through the city. On Sunday afternoon at two the new members will be baptized in an improvised fountain in Catharinaplein. For this purpose a plastic slide will be inflated featuring a minuscule bath at the end. The fire brigade will provide the water and the first-year students will take off all their clothes to slide down stark naked.

The highlight of the festival is the ‘Certamen’ on Saturday in the tent set up in Markt square, a contest in which the best tunas will perform in fierce competition for the title ‘Best Tuna’. The four-member jury will include

dr. Lucas Asselbergs, head of Studium Generale. Sunday will see the conclusion of the festival, which consist of performances in the tent in Markt square.

As of this week the photo exhibition (set up in collaboration with Studium Generale) will be on display, which convincingly captures the atmosphere of the Eindhoven Tuna festival. The photos are put up along the walkway between the Auditorium and the Hoofdgebouw. (NS)/.
