De TU/e in 2020
Waar staat de TU/e in 2020, in de regio, nationaal en internationaal? Wekelijks geeft iemand van binnen of buiten de universiteit zijn of haar visie.

‘Where innovation starts’ is the motto of the TU/e. It states that the TU/e aims at being a nationally and internationally acknowledged source of innovative ideas, designs and research. Innovation requires mixed teams of talented people with open minds who dare to dream, imagine and create: those who can materialize their visions. For this purpose the TU/e needs top-scientists diverse in qualities, capacities, disciplines, cultures, personalities and gender.
The WISE network (Women in Science Eindhoven network) envisions a TU/e in 2020 with a minimum number of female professors of fifteen percent and higher numbers of women scientists in higher positions. We realize that this will be a challenging task for the TU/e. The ‘Monitor Vrouwelijke Hoogleraren 2009’ published last week shows that the TU/e has the lowest percentage of female professors of all Dutch universities and that this percentage has not changed in the last five years, while it has increased in almost all other universities. We must establish that the Lisbon agreement of 2000 (at least twenty-five percent female professors in 2010 in the EU), which was adapted by the Dutch government to fifteen percent, has not produced measurable effects at the TU/e.
We feel that not only the TU/e but also the Dutch research community and society in general would benefit from a broader presence of talented female scientists at higher academic positions. Access to qualified potential candidates is not the issue as is shown by the numbers of female PhD-students (twenty-eight percent) and post-docs (twenty-four percent) at the TU/e. Therefore, we think new initiatives are needed, which include coaching and mentoring young scientists, improving general awareness about gender-related preconceptions, putting women in evaluation committees (people tend to choose people like themselves) and more.
One of the goals of WISE network is to support and stimulate female scientists. To inform and encourage a discussion on how to build a successful scientific career (regardless of gender!), WISE network organizes the event entitled ‘Preparing for a successful scientific career’ on Tuesday the 20th of October.
