Bemgba Bevan Nyakuma (27) from Nigeria, a research student/intern at the Schuit Institute of Technology, Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry

When taken?
While taking a break from work, I came across a crowd of first-year architecture students standing beside a community of tents erected near the Auditorium and the Hoofdgebouw. This midday demonstration was part of a first-year Bachelor class in structural design at TU/e’s Bouwkunde Department on October 14.

What do we see?
The picture captures the tents made from polyethylene materials, wood and commonplace items. The students set out to conceive and design moveable tents which could be used in emergencies or disaster relief efforts. This concept merges the idea of design structures and emergency relief.

Why this picture?
This picture in a thousand words mirrors this vision -Land of the Innovator- and the motto -Where innovation starts- of this great citadel of learning. The tents also add credence to the need to take seriously the issues of sustainability and climate change. There is no better way and place to imbibe these tents than in the young minds at TU/e. This is the premise behind this picture.
