According to Van Ham there have been intensive consultations in the past few weeks about this subject between the municipality, the university and Vestide, the accommodation agency for students. “According to responsible alderwoman Mary Fiers the municipality is willing to let the space boxes stay in place also after 1 March”, says Van Ham. “However, this has been permitted by the municipality only under very strict conditions”, Van Ham explained in the university council meeting on Monday 1 February. Thus, before long there must be clarity about a structural accommodation facility on the TU/e grounds, for which it will be necessary to amend the zoning ordinance for the TU/e grounds even before the summer holidays.
The report explaining the ideas about the development of the grounds, which was presented to the city council in September 2009, says that there is an overall building capacity for more than six hundred to seven hundred housing units. Within this context a design has been assumed of residential buildings in three storeys linking up with Potentiaal, the current accommodation of the Department of Electrical Engineering. This Department is planning to move out of the buildings concerned in three years, after which the construction of the housing units can be begun. To all present appearances, the space boxes will be allowed to stay until that time. However, objections against the resolution adopted by the city council may still be lodged. (HK) /. |
