‘New to the Netherlands’ part 2:
    Tips for a good start
16 september 2010 - Indre Kalinauskaite, a Master student of Human Technology Interaction from Lithuania: “Do things beside your studies. I am usually very busy studying, but I still go out and do fun things, like visit a jazz concert. In the beginning my activities were limited to things that were organized at TU/e, but once you start exploring and go downtown a bit more, opportunities will present themselves.”

Prof. dr. ir. Bart ter Haar Romenij, who works at the Biomedical Engineering Department and is affiliated as vice-dean Research and distinguished professorwith the Biomedical School in Shenyang, China: “Make sure you organize things together with students from the host country as much as possible. That way you will learn the language and get to know the culture. At our student faculty association Protagoras we deploy foreign students when organizing symposia, for instance. That works very well.”

Nic van Kooten studies Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences and apart from that he is chairman of Interactie: the international student faculty association of the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences. “We have noticed that integration is an awkward issue. International students need more contact with Dutch students. My tip: approach Dutch students. Visit the activitiesof your student faculty association. Those are the moments for making Dutch friends. You will see that Dutch students also like to meet international students.” (SK)
