    What's happening?

Starting 23 September all quiz buffs can take part in an English-language pub quiz every Thursday from 20.00 hours at café Carrousel in Markt square. This quiz is developed especially for the international community in Eindhoven: expats, international employees and students. It is going to be a weekly event and the idea is for Dutch inhabitants of Eindhoven to join in as well.

There is a great deal going on in Eindhoven, but little as English-language activities go, initiator Joost van Dijck found out. Which is regrettable, seeing that Eindhoven has such a large international community. So he asked a quiz bureau to draw up an English-language pub quiz. “Except forthe usual trivial questions there may also be questions about the Dutch Highway Code. There is an educational component as well, then.”

Van Dijck is hoping that Dutch inhabitants of Eindhoven will join in too. “It seems like a good way to set socialization and integration going. What’s funny about such a quiz is that, even though you may not know each other yet, you will still get talking to each other without any trouble. Together you are involved in something enjoyable, which involves constant consultation.”

Prior registration is not required, so anyone can drop in and register on site. Individually or with several people, anything goes, for the organization will introduce the participants to each other. Several rounds will be played in groups of two to five persons. Participation costs will be three euros per person.

If Joost van Dijck has anything to say about it, things will not end with the pub quiz alone. Together with various parties he is sounding out the possibilities of setting up a special meeting center for expats and other international Eindhoven inhabitants. At present Van Dijck cannot say exactly when the center will actually be realized. (SK)
