Eindhoven through the eyes of Chinese students: the result
21 oktober 2010 - Friday October 17 saw the outcome at last: the result of ‘Eindhoven through the eyes of Chinese students’. Under the watchful eyes of Rector Magnificus Hans van Duijn, mayor Rob van Gijzel, Philips board chairman Harry Hendriks and Ping Luo, the dean from the Education council of the Chinese embassy, a total of 33(!) prizes was awarded.

Mingshuo Zhang, a student at the Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE), won a second prize with his design of a Chinese lamp. The main reason for Mingshuo’s coming to the Netherlands is the great volume of handiwork you do at the DAE. “In China nearly everything in design programs is done by computer. I am convinced that you need to work with the materials if you really want to become a good designer. You need to know how they feel and smell and you have to know what the possibilities of the materials are. At the DAE handiwork forms a major component, which is why I stopped my study in China and came to the Netherlands.”

The special contribution award was for Yim Wai. He has lived in Eindhoven for forty years and wrote a story about all his experiences. The three golden awards were carried off by women. Last week the design by one of the winners -Yanliu Lin- was shown on the front page of Cursor. The award ceremony even made it to chinese television. It was shown on CCTV News in China. (HB)
