    International quiz night
7 april 2011 - The international quiz night in the Carrousel in Markt square saw a special edition on Thursday March 31. More than one hundred and seventy people took part in teams of five persons at most. For three hours these teams were flooded with numerous questions on subjects such as music, sports, history and the Netherlands.

The organization was in the hands of Number 42. Number 42 also organizes many quizzes in Dutch, but the English-language variant in Eindhoven is a recent novelty. “We thought it might be a nice idea for this target group as well”, says Edwin Verbruggen from Number 42. “And it is indeed. Each time we have some 80 to 100 visitors, this week being the busiest night since we have begun.”

The big turnout was probably thanks to this night being sponsored by Brainport International Community. It was not required to pay the normal entrance fee of 3 euro, snacks were free and everybody was given a 7-euro discount on the drinks.
At the back of the hall three teams from the TU/e Master Sustainable Energy are competing for a prize: team ‘Pepe’, team ‘Sundar’s army’ and team ‘Zombies R us’. They all want to win, and beat each other, of course. Chetan Suvvi, Ahmed Abdisalaam and Juan Soriano are happy and proud when the half-way score puts them in 11th place with their team ‘Pepe’. Lower than team ‘Sundar’s army’, but higher than ‘Zombies R Us’. The match is taken very seriously indeed. After all, prizes to be won include a free round of drinks for the whole table or a bottle of champagne.

At 23.00 hours all seven rounds of ten questions are finished and the bonus question follows: ‘How loud -in decibels- is the loudest burp ever produced?’ Two teams, including ‘Zombies R us’, have precisely the right answer: 109 decibels. This reply wins them a free drink.

And what about the teams of Sustainable Energy in the overall standings? Not bad. ‘Zombies R Us’ ends in 18th place and ‘Pepe in 11th. The winning team of the Master Sustainable Energy is ‘Sundar’s army’. They win the fifth place and are all presented with a Brainport umbrella. (HB)
