Is there life apart from your studies? Active students | Part 1
9 juni 2011 - For foreign students it is often difficult to plan activities apart from their studies, for there are hefty penalties to be paid by non-Dutch Master students who do not complete their Master study within two years. Fortunately there are still students who do succeed in planning studies and activities side by side. How do they manage this? And why do they find it so important to do more than studying alone? In the final theme series of this year we shall be talking to students and PhD candidates who give their all to their study stint at TU/e.

To be (an English-speaking university) or not to be?

9 juni 2011 - All on-campus restrooms come with stickers saying ‘Don’t forget to turn off the lights on the toilet’. Wrong. ‘In the toilet’ is what they should say. Is this a one-time mistake, or is TU/e really that bad at English? What’s in English at TU/e, and is an international university really determined by its mastery of the English language? Cursor got to the bottom of it.

Internet needs to be smarter to handle explosive growth

9 juni 2011 - Internet data traffic has grown by a factor of 15,000 in the last 15 years. But in all that time there has been no significant update of the internet itself; data packets are still transported in the same, hardly intelligent way, according to prof. Antonio Liotta. But that needs to change quickly, he says, because the growth of internet will be even greater in the near future because of trends like the emergence of HD video, ‘cloud computing’ and the ‘Internet of Things’. Liotta believes the solution lies in intelligent, learning networks, inspired partly by nature: ants, bees and the human brain.

9 juni 2011 - The Italian student Matteo Santini is devoting himself together with ROOD, the youth section of the Socialist Party, to instructing international students about their rights as tenants of rooms. This year the Rent Assessment Committee helped him win a procedure against his landlord. In the autumn he intends to organize a big informative meeting to enlighten other students about their rights as well. Last Wednesday saw an informal test meeting in de Bunker.

Housing arrangements international students to be improved
9 juni 2011 - As from next academic year, international master students appealing to TU/e for accommodation will face more favorable conditions than current students. For example, contrary to last year, they’ll no longer be stuck with a one-year contract, and they’ll be provided with information on the house and the room they’ll be assigned prior to their arrival.
