From 3.30 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Annet Houben teaches Dutch to ten partners of expats. Two weeks ago she started a new series of courses again. She teaches the expats for ninety minutes per week. Houben: “Of course this is very meager. That is why we emphasize that they need to practice a lot at home and do their homework. Ninety minutes per week is just not going to get you there.”

16 februari 2011 - What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
It is not very often I get advice and even less often I follow it. Trial and error is the hardest way to find something out - I chose it. The nearest thing to ‘advice’ that comes to my mind is a remark made by my second-year studies tutor. She said: “You will never have enough”. I’m not sure why, but I remember this remark once in a while. Looking back, it does make sense.

On February 25 the Brabant Expat Center (BEC) Eindhoven opened its doors. Almost a year later it is already expanding, as a result of the large numbers of expats in the Eindhoven region. Every day the expat center deals with loads of questions and requests from enterprises, organizations and expats about permits, accommodation, the tax authorities or child benefit.
