Premiere for mathematician with TU/e roots

30 oktober 2008 - Dr.ir. Bert Zwart is the first researcher outside the United States to win the Erlang prize for the best researcher under 36 in the field of ‘Applied Probability’. Zwart is awarded the prize for his exceptional contribution in the field of interfaces between applied calculation of probability, computer science and communication networks. At present Zwart is employed at the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science in Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD at the TU/e in 2001. From 2002 to 2006 he was active here as an assistant professor with the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science. Since August of this year he has been a Senior Fellow of the research institute EURANDOM, which is affiliated with the TU/e. Zwart is praised by the jury of the Erlang prize in particular for his contribution to a method by which it is possible to calculate the probability of the loss of data packages in communication networks. From America the prize winner reacted by saying he was proud: “The list of previous winners is impressive. I am truly honored to be the first person employed at a non-American institute who is receiving this prize.”
