Culture for expats in Veldhoven?
23 april 2009 - Theater de Schalm in Veldhoven is considering setting up a program especially for expats. “At this moment one can find very few English-language programs on the podiums in Eindhoven”, says Adrie de Beun from Theater de Schalm in Veldhoven. At present they are investigating the cultural needs of people who live, work or study here temporarily.

For this purpose the theater is asking people to indicate whether there is demand for English-language theatrical productions in the Eindhoven region. “We would like to know whether international employees from companies like Philips, ASML and TU/e are interested in this”, De Beun explains. “If there is enough interest, we are going to compose a special program with English-language productions.”/.

Are you interested in English-language cultural performances and would you consider making use of these? Then you can report your interest via info@deschalm.com with reference to Expats.

Cultural agenda for next week

What is on the cultural program for Eindhoven next week if you do not speak (or understand) Dutch?

Let’s celebrate

Four singers and dancers accompanied by a band bring covers from artists such as Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, Kool & The Gang, James Brown, Hot Chocolate and Stevie Wonder. In this way three decades -the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s- of smashing disco, funk and soul hits may be witnessed. Not only the sound, but also the looks: loose-fitting legs, Afro-wigs, unfastened glitter blouses and high-heeled shiny boots. Let’s celebrate on Queen’s night with a free swinging after-party by DJ Ventilator!

Wednesday 29 April, 20.15 hours, from 24 euros, Theater De Schalm, Meiveld 3 Veldhoven. Prior reservation required.

Indie disco

Alternative dance music featuring Connan Mockasin, a singer songwriter from New Zeeland, VJs Schwartzwald & Herteweide, Friekvolk Foyermeisjes and Rop met een P. Alternative dance music.

Sunday 2 May, Effenaar, Dommelstraat Eindhoven. Admission: five euros.

Finnish blues

The Finnish duo, singer, guitarist Jo Buddy and drummer Down Home King III had already been working the music scene hard for several years when their debut Grits & Rattles in 2006 unleashed a genuine hype in Finland. The blues of Jo Buddy & Down Home King III covers ragtime, down home blues, spirituals, swamp boogies, soul, rock-‘n-roll, rockabilly, garage rock, West-African rhythms and even Spanish flamenco ... rough and mean blues with snarling guitars, panic singing and elementary drums.

Sunday 26 April, 17.00 hours, Kaffee de Groot, Wilhelminaplein 8, admission is gratis.
