‘Piled Higher and Deeper’ visits TU/e
28 mei 2009 - The creator and artist of ‘Piled Higher and Deeper’ (PHD), a comic strip about PhDs, Jorge Cham, is invited to the TU/e on Wednesday June 17 to give a comical lecture on the working life of PhDs. Promove, the association of PhD candidates, organizes this event with the author of the comic strip which is often called the Dilbert of academia.

“As a PhD you can really identify with his comic strip”, says Çiçek Güven, board member of Promove. The comic strip PHD is published online where it receives over seven million page views a month from over a thousand universities and colleges worldwide. The Piled Higher and Deeper comic strip appears in The Tech, MIT’s student newspaper.

Jorge Cham was born and raised in the Republic of Panama. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech and his MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University where he specialized in Robotics. At Stanford he started drawing PHD. He was subsequently an Instructor and Research Associate at Caltech from 2003-2005, where his work focused on developing Smart Neural Implants.

He has published and presented nationally and abroad on his Robotics and Neural Prosthetics research. He also travels and presents all over the world to thousands of graduate students, faculty and administrators on the graduate student experience./.
