This week’s photographer: Kristina Sharypova (26) from Russia, a PhD candidate of Industrial Engineering

When taken?
Last week at one of the Pavilion offices.

What do we see?
Joachim Arts (26), a Dutch PhD student of Industrial Engineering, who is captured at the moment of working on his research theme. PhD candidate -‘aspirant’- is a person who would like to continue his education/research work at an academic institution. The word ‘aspirant’ comes from the Latin word ‘aspirans’ - striving for something. In a way it means that PhD studies are different from graduate studies (Master’s degree) as the latter are more proactive. The former presume some initiative from the student in receiving profound skills and techniques in a chosen topic and willingness to develop scientific questions.

Why this picture?
You can have a look at an ordinary day of PhD students. It is important to mention that this type of work is inspiring and gives you satisfaction as much as any other non-academic type of work.
