    What's happening?

How do you see Eindhoven? The Chinese student association ACSSE posed this question to Chinese inhabitants of Eindhoven about a year ago. The answer is expected on Friday October 15, when the result of the design competition ‘Eindhoven in the Eyes of Chinese Students and Engineers’ will be announced.

One made a comic strip, someone else made an abstract painting of the map of Eindhoven on rice paper, while yet another designed an apartment of bamboo. A Chinese man who settled in Eindhoven forty years ago tells his story in words and images. Master student of Electrical Engineering Yan Li was surprised by the man/woman ratio at TU/e and submitted the (stage-managed) photo on the right.
The winner will be announced on October 15 during a festive night in the Auditorium starting at 19.30 hours. The jury includes John Körmeling, the artist behind the Dutch entry Happy Street for the Shanghai Expo.
The 27 best entries will be shown in specially designed objects that are at once reminiscent of light bulbs (which are symbolic of Eindhoven thanks to Philips) and of Chinese lanterns. The intention is for the mobile exhibition to be displayed at different locations within the city as well. More clarity about this will need to be achieved over the coming months. (SK)
