    What's happening?

‘Foreign to Eindhoven’ is a joint project of the Historisch Openluchtmuseum and museum Kempenland, both of which are located in Eindhoven. The joint activities concern everything that is now familiar and that once was new to Eindhoven.

Joris van Dierendonck, project leader, summarizes it as follows: “Although we soon take customs for granted, this is a relative phenomenon. Indeed, many of our customs were once novel and frightening. Just think of money as a means of payment or of the first pizza. An important introduction of new traditions to Eindhoven came from ‘new Eindhovenaren’. In this project we are showing how new Eindhovenaren from the past have contributed to the design and everyday life of the city as we know it today. Various activities of the project are intended to activate the cultural participation of the current generation of new Eindhovenaren. We want to make people think and show them that everything was once new.” (HB)

The program will kick off this weekend with the event ‘Brabant Heroes’ in the Historisch Openluchtmuseum. September 4 will see the start of the exhibition ‘Foreign to Eindhoven’ in museum Kempenland. The total program may be viewed on: www.vreemdineindhoven.nl

Foreign to Eindhoven - Brabant Heroes

Kick-off for the project ‘Foreign to Eindhoven’. For thousands of years Eindhoven has been visited by ‘foreigners’. From the Romans to the Spaniards in the Eighty Years’ War and the arrival of Philips in the late 19th century: time and again everyday life was changed by external influences. Much of what we now regard as familiar and trusted is in fact derived from people and ideas from all corners of the globe. The presentations are in Dutch, but there remains enough to be seen otherwise.
