Japanese spring opened with ikebana demonstration
5 maart 2009 - Liesbeth Rodrigues de Miranda gave a demonstration of ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, in the Meditation Center in De Hal on Tuesday 3 March. By preparing seven flower arrangements she opened the Japanese spring for a select audience that was captivated by her art. During the demonstration, the viewers attending were treated to a modest Japanese meal consisting of rice, egg and sausages.

The meeting was an initiative of Humanistic Student Counseling and Kinjin, the Japanese culture association for Eindhoven students. After an opening speech by university secretary Harry Roumen -who is an honorary member of Kinjin- Rodrigues de Miranda showed how by using a single flower and some leaves or branches from nature you can create a genuine work of art. All of this being in accordance with the traditional Japanese rules, of course: attention to scalene triangles, the water level in the vase (higher in summer than in winter) and the direction of the light.

Last year ikebana expert Rodrigues de Miranda was also present at TU/e by invitation of Kinjin. This year the culture association has also taken the initiative to organize a lecture on Confucianism (16 April) as well as two Reiki workshops (7 and 14 May) in the Meditation Center.
