TU/e evacuating 1,000 people in disaster exercise
14 mei 2009 - TU/e needs some one thousand volunteers -students and staff members- for a large-scale disaster exercise in October. The group will be evacuated during the exercise; the idea is for some four hundred of them to spend a night at reception locations off campus.

The disaster exercise will be led by the Ministry of Defense, which has invited the university to take part. In this context TU/e can define its own exercise objectives, says ing. Mirjam Jahnke, head of Industrial assistance and security at TU/e.

As yet it is not known what the fictional reason for the evacuation will be. The script will in any case be based on a preceding threat, Jahnke explains: “This means that a prior warning will be issued for several days, whereupon our disaster teams and those of the municipality will have to start considering how they are going to respond to the threat.”

The total exercise will span four days, from Thursday 8 thru Sunday 11 October. The hundreds of volunteers will not come into action until Saturday, following the municipal resolution for the large-scale evacuation of the TU/e grounds.

TU/e departments
Apart from the Defense Ministry and TU/e, the exercise will involve the municipality, the Eindhoven fire brigade and medical assistance. In addition to the large-scale evacuation and everything it entails, the role of the various TU/e departments will be exercised as well during the disaster scenario. /.
