BME lecturer science buddy for politician
19 november 2009 - Dr. Carlijn Bouten, senior lecturer with Biomedical Engineering, is one of the seven members of the KNAW section The Young Academy that will assist chairwoman Femke Halsema of the political party Groen Links in interpreting scientific information. The purpose is to reduce the gap between MPs and science. Bouten had her first talk last week.

The initiative for this pilot project, which is to last a year, lies entirely in the lap of The Young Academy. Eleven chairpersons of political parties were approached with the offer of assistance by young scientists. Five reacted with enthusiasm, including Halsema.

Impartial
“Their own research bureaus have a strong political focus and aim for political gain. We are professional and impartial”, says Bouten. “In imitation of a British example we are trying to bridge the gap between science and politics. We want to nurture mutual understanding and show the social relevance of science in its full breadth. You often see that politicians think scientists are too balanced and researchers think politicians are too fond of short cuts. We intend to provide factual knowledge. ”

Bouten was Halsema’s guest in The Hague last week, together with a lawyer from Tilburg University. She cannot divulge anything about the concrete questions posed to her. “Some rules have been agreed on, one of which is that both parties will be reticent in publicity activity. The questions asked by MPs will be treated confidentially and the scientists will remain behind the scenes. Another rule is that the contact can be broken if there is no ‘click’ between the people involved.” For one, Bouten has indicated beforehand that it would be better for her not to be a buddy for Marianne Thieme of the Partij voor de Dieren(Party on behalf of the Animals) because she is herself involved in animal experiments. “With Halsema I do get on well.” Contacts will take place mainly via e-mail and telephone. In addition, the young academics will soon be invited to a party meeting. (NS)/.
