TU/e alumna Anitha Sarkar has won the Shell Master Prize 2009 for her research into solar cells. On Tuesday March 9 she was awarded this sustainability prize plus the accompanying check of five thousand euros. Through her project entitled ‘Spectral conversion materials for improving solar cell efficiency’ Sarkar proved that solar cells produce more energy when a special coating is applied to them. This coating ensures that part of the sunlight is converted into another color, so that it may be utilized for conversion into electricity. Sarkar expects that this will make it possible to produce solar energy at lower costs per kWh.
