Cycling through the Netherlands: join in if you wish
9 september 2010 - It was a spontaneous idea that was born within an unofficial friendly cricket club: ‘let’s explore the Netherlands while cycling. Anyone who wants to can join in’. Which is how one Dutch and sixteen Indian Master students of TU/e got onto their bikes on Saturday 28 August. Destination: Den Bosch. Distance: manipulated to one hundred kilometers.

“We were really in it for the cycling itself”, Bobby Johny Varocky (Mechanical Engineering), Mukul Rocque and Siddhesh Patwardhan (both from Embedded Systems) explain. “Simply the fact that you sometimes need to work hard makes it such fun.” That is why the club of friends decided to cover at least one hundred kilometers. The most interesting place they saw on the map was Den Bosch - the round trip was only seventy kilometers, though. “So we zigzagged”, says Mukul. “And we got lost, so we definitely made a hundred kilometers”, Bobby adds, laughing. It was a stiff journey, especially for those who have only just arrived in the Netherlands and are therefore not accustomed to cycling so much. “Still, the landscape with its meadows and farms was so beautiful, that we really didn’t feel like giving up. Not even when it started to rain.”

The friends have developed a plan to reconnoiter all of the Netherlands. Again the motto is: join in if you wish - you only need to send a mail to one of the students mentioned. (SK)
