I wonder why ...
15 april 2010 - Our very first question comes from Hejie Yang (China), a PhD candidate at the ECO group of Electrical Engineering. He asked Cursor: ‘I wonder what Dutch students do after work or after classes at university’. His explanation: “Actually it’s not my own question. A friend from Denmark was here for the weekend and he asked me this. I didn’t know, I never see them. I usually go out with my friends from the ECO group.”

The answer this week is coming from Pieter van Dorst (the Netherlands), a trainee in the SAI Mathematics for Industry program.

“In my experience a lot of students participate in activities organized by student (sport) associations. Almost all sports can be found at TU/e and there are even associations for things like photography, motorcycling and live action role playing games. Since most students live together in student houses where they share a living room, kitchen and bathroom, after classes students also simply hang out with roommates or friends. In contrast to many cultures, in the Netherlands this usually doesn't take place in public, so that's why you don't see a lot of people on the street. Perhaps the Dutch climate is to blame?"
