Industrial Design students from TU Delft are collaborating with their lecturer Arjen Jansen to make a laptop running on human energy. With this design Jansen and his students are competing in a contest organized by computer chip manufacturer Intel, which is trying to find a way to run a laptop on ‘green’ energy. Other competitors are working on solar panels and fuel cells to produce the required electricity. On 28 November the winner will be announced. The computer requires a power of 20 watt. As there is always a loss of energy, users have to generate about 40 watt. They do so by moving up and down a kind of footboard coupled to a dynamo. Expectations are that the effort required will be equivalent to cycling without a head wind at a speed of twelve kilometers per hour. The students will be awarded credits for their participation in the design contest. (HOP)
