Finnish interest for cooperation 3TU
13 december 2007 - Why did the three Dutch universities of technology, Eindhoven, Delft and Twente (3TU), decide to work together? And how is the cooperation working out?
These are just a few questions the Finnish researcher Pirre Hyötynen M.Sc. is trying to answer during her visit from 3 until 14 December to the three Dutch universities. Results of the enquiry will be a source of background information for policymakers of higher education in Finland.

The request for research was given to the organization Hyötynen works for (the Finnish Association of Graduate Engineers TEK) by the Ministry of Education in Finland. They want to know what has been done in other countries in the field of higher education in engineering. This study is part of a bigger project, where a National Collaboration Group is working to create a national strategy for the development of engineering education in Finland. Pirre Hyötynen: “We are especially looking at the various ways of strategic cooperation and mergers that other universities have realized, because that is probably what lies ahead for our universities too. In addition to making a literature study of what kind of strategic cooperation has taken place in other countries, I will study a few case examples in greater detail. One case is 3TU.”
Why the special interest for 3TU? The Finnish researcher responds: “Because it involves three top-level universities providing engineering education who now have ‘joined forces’. We are interested to hear about the driving forces behind such a decision and how the universities are coping with the process. The Netherlands as a country resembles the Scandinavian countries in many respects, for example, how society is organized and how education is valued.”

Viewpoints
During her stay at the TU/e from 12 to 14 December Pirre Hyötynen will interview university representatives and top management. In addition, she would also like to hear the viewpoints of other stakeholders such as university staff, students or representatives of the business community and employers.

Hyötynen: “I do not expect them to be experts on university strategy, but rather I would be interested to hear their views on studies, career prospects, expectations et cetera. Also, what do they know about 3TU and what kind of possibilities is that going to bring students in the future?”/.
