Action against leaving lights on after toilet visit
20 mei 2010 - Washing their hands after visiting the toilet is a lesson soon learnt by many toddlers when out of their diapers. ‘And also remember the greenhouse gases’ might well have been added to this. In that case students and staff members at TU/e might be more alert to switching off the light after their visit to the toilet, for there is a great deal to be improved in this bit of environmental awareness at university, as the Chemiewinkel has established. Therefore it is devoting attention to this issue by means of stickers pasted campus-wide.

It is not the first time the Chemiewinkel demands attention for the useless lighting of the toilets on campus. A few years ago the shop was granted permission by a number of building managers to conduct a sticker action in part of the TU/e grounds as well.

This time the Chemiewinkel joined forces with the Accommodation Department (Dienst Huisvesting), which also feels very strongly about sustainability and gave the go-ahead for the sticker action across campus. “Through such actions we do try to keep up our green image, which is our basis, in fact”, says PR official Jeaphianne van Rijn of the Chemiewinkel, who in an earlier action pointed out the savings made by double-sided printing.

The Chemiewinkel has many other sustainability plans. For instance, next year it hopes by joining forces with the Accommodation Department to get solar panels installed - on one TU/e building to start with, but in case of demonstrable savings preferably all over campus in the end. “This project is still in its initial stage, though.” (MvdV)/.
